As the AAP government presented the Delhi Janlokpal Bill in the assembly Monday, former party leaders Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan protested against the government for allegedly diluting the bill. They, along with their supporters, were later detained.
Carrying placards alleging “those who betray people are scared of an open public debate”, Bhushan and Yadav joined supporters under the Swaraj Abhiyan banner.
Former AAP leader Anand Kumar and Timarpur MLA Pankaj Pushkar were a part of the demonstration.
“Bhushan, Yadav and Pushkar along with 150 supporters were detained under Section 65 of the Delhi Police Act and taken to the operations cell of the North Delhi district police. They were let off by 4 pm,” said DCP (North) Madhur Verma.
Bhushan, on the other hand, alleged that the group was detained on orders of the Delhi Assembly Speaker. He alleged Speaker Ram Niwas Goel told the police that protesters should not be allowed to march to the gate of the assembly.
Swaraj Abhiyan later held a meeting of its national working committee and resolved to hold a candlelight vigil Tuesday evening outside the assembly.
Alleging that those claiming to be “messiah of the Janlokpal movement” were killing the movement, Yadav said, “The bill has a provision of investigating central government employees and the Centre will not allow this. Then Kejriwal will play the victim card. The 2014 Bill did not have this provision.”
Kumar said, “The Janlokpal Bill was the biggest reason behind the making of the AAP… but today, the goal is abandoned…”
