A 42-year-old man died after falling into an uncovered manhole in Northeast Delhi late on Thursday night.

A 42-year-old man died after falling into an uncovered manhole in Northeast Delhi late on Thursday night.

The police said Devender Kumar,a labourer,was walking back home — police said he was in an inebriated condition — when he fell into the 12-foot deep manhole.

“The manhole had been constructed by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) near Ram Nagar,Shahdara. After falling in,Kumar drowned in the drain connecting the manhole. His neighbours Harvinder Singh and Prem Pal jumped into the drain to rescue him and rushed him to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital,” a senior police officer said.

He was declared dead on arrival at the hospital. Doctors suspect he drowned since there were no external injuries on the body,the police said.

“The deceased was in an inebriated state. We are verifying whether there was any negligence on part of the MCD and will register a case if need be,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast),Surender Singh Yadav,said.

A case of causing death due to negligence under Section 304 A of the IPC has been registered at Shahdara police station against unknown persons.

Kumar is survived by his 36-year-old wife and three daughters aged 20,15 and 12 years.
