Winds,cloud cover pull down maximum temperatures

The New Year began on a sunny note,but on the second day maximum temperatures plummeted to six degrees below normal. On Sunday,the morning dawned misty and windy. With little sunshine throughout the day,residents spent the holiday huddled around bonfires and wrapped in woollens.

For the past two days,the maximum temperature had been rising. On Sunday,however,cold northern winds and clouds kept the sunshine out pushing down the mercury. The Safdarjung Met department recorded the maximum temperature at 14.6 degrees Celsius.

On Saturday,the maximum temperature was 16.7 degrees Celsius,while on Friday it was 17.8 degrees.

According to the Met website,a few areas in Delhi are facing coldwave conditions,which will continue for the next 48 hours.

The minimum temperatures,meanwhile,have remained above normal due to increase in the levels of moisture,unlike previous years when New Years eve witnessed very low temperatures. With the Met department predicting dry weather in the coming few days,the night temperatures too are expected to drop. The next week,for instance,is likely to have night temperatures in the range of 5-6 degrees,compared to the current minimum of 7.8 degrees,which is one degree above normal.

The minimum temperature will remain around 7 degrees on Monday,following which it will see a dip, said the Officer on Duty at the Safdarjung Met department. The maximum temperature may see a rise by the end of next week.

The Met department also said Delhiites can expect ground frost over the next two to three days as the cloudy and misty mornings continue.
