There were 31 air conditioners and 15 desert coolers for the summer, and 14 oil heaters, seven halogen heaters and four rod heaters – 25 in all — for the winter. Response to an RTI query has revealed that former chief minister Sheila Dikshit got the Delhi government’s public works department to fix these and many more high electricity consuming devices at her former Type VIII bungalow on 3, Motilal Nehru Marg at the time when the city was struggling with a perpetual shortage of electricity.
The revelation also comes more than a month after former prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh – who is now allotted the same bungalow by the CPWD as his post-retirement government accommodation – had ensured before moving in that expenses for renovation and refurnishing of the bungalow be done only under the limit permitted by CPWD.
Besides the A-Cs, coolers and the heaters, Dikshit got fitted in the 5,700-sq-ft Lutyens’ bungalow 16 air purifiers, 12 geysers, three television sets, two microwave ovens, two water coolers, two RO systems and a deep freezer besides two refrigerators. The house has three huge bedrooms, five bathrooms, a drawing hall, dining room and six servants’ quarters.
In its reply to the RTI application, the PWD also said it has removed the electrical appliances after Dikshit moved out in February this year. Some of these appliances are currently being used in various government offices.
