We need a PR dept: Outgoing chief

“A PR team for Delhi Police is the need of the hour — a team of experts trained in the art of disseminating information and perception management. The London Metropolitan Police is only one-tenth the size of Delhi Police. But they have 63 media professionals (none of them police officers) to manage the public’s perception of the force. In a city like ours,where the media plays a vital role in forming public opinion,it is a necessary step. Our good work is never shown to the public by the press,” he said.

Kumar’s tenure was quite eventful given the number of high profile cases,including the December 16 gangrape and the IPL spot-fixing racket,in the last 13 months.

There were even calls for his resignation in the wake of the gangrape incident. Even Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had criticised his force for its handling of the incident and the protests that followed.

Kumar said he was proud of solving all the major cases during his tenure. He said his only regret was that he did not have more time to work for the welfare of his men.

The past few days have been unusually busy. Kumar has been going through the chargesheets of several cases pending before the court.

He said the 2000 match-fixing scandal,in which former South African captain Hansie Cronje was an accused,was to be filed in the court later this week after 13 years.

“In the December 16 gangrape case,we arrested all the accused within 72 hours and filed a chargesheet within ten days. We also cracked the Pune serial blasts case,which went unnoticed by the media. The chargesheet in the IPL spot-fixing case will also be filed soon,” he said.

Kumar said he would hang up his boots on July 31 but would closely follow the cases through the media.

“I am going to see my daughter in London. A policeman ceases to be a policeman the day he retires. I will relax in the days to come.”
