Every time the quartet Dhwani perform on stage,they not only rock to a different tune but also sing in a different language. A multilingual band of four vocalists from Kolkata,they sing in a mindboggling 25 different languages. Dhwani will perform some patriotic numbers at a tribute concert to the Kargil martyrs at Kamani Auditorium today.
All the members of the six-year-old band are vocalists and perform together on concept-based shows with pre-recorded music. For this concert in the run up to Independence Day,they have put together a mix of old and new Bollywood songs interspersed with jazz,apart from some original compositions. Says Navin Daga,36: We take a theme and then put together a collection of songs based on it. This time it is Vande Matram, Thirty-two-year-old homemaker Sarita Chandak,who is part of the band,says jazz is gaining ground in India but nothing works if you dont have a strong foothold in Indian classical. Disciples of Ustad Ghulam Neyaz Khan of Rampur Sehaswan Gharana,they are trained in Indian as well as western classical music.
