Top seed Vishnu Vardhan had a second-set blip, but managed to make his way into the quarter-finals of the Indian F7 Futures tennis tournament at the DLTA Complex on Wednesday.

The Chennai boy was off to a brisk start against Max Jones, wrapping up the first set with the loss of just one game, but the Briton managed a break in the second, and held on to draw level. The 21-year-old made sure, however, that his lower-ranked opponent did not get the chance to hope for an upset after that, getting the necessary break to wrap it up 6-1 3-6 6-3.

Vardhan, who had trained at the Nick Bolletieri Academy earlier in the year and returned with renewed confidence,is looking for his second win on the ITF circuit after his victory here last month.

In the quarter-finals,Vardhan will meet seventh seeded Rupesh Roy,who had a quicker stint on the court, getting through when opponent Ronak Manuja retired while trailing 7-6 (3) 2-0.

Second seeded Korean Young-Jun Kim will face sixth seed Virali Murugesan, who made short work of Sitaram Sudanwa, winning 6-1 6-3. Kim beat Shane La Porte 6-7(5) 7-5 6-2.

N Prashant was the fourth Indian into the last eight,as beat Delhi’s Ashutosh Singh 6-3 6-4. Prashant will have a tough ask in the quarter-finals,with Dutch fifth seed Peter Lucassen up ahead.

Lucassen was engaged in a long, battling encounter with Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan, but the Indian had to call it quits while trailing 6-7 (6) 6-4 4-1.
