Video shows damaged roof at Delhi’s Ambience mall; part of renovation work, say staff

8After a purported video of Ambience Mall in Southwest Delhi’s Vasant Kunj popped up on social media, showing a damaged roof and debris strewn across different floors, the Delhi Police said it is probing if it was due to a collapse. No reports of any injuries have come in, officers said.

A spokesperson for the mall, however, said it was part of renovation work on the false ceiling and the premises was shut on Monday for the work. “The false ceiling required renovation work and it was a planned move… no business was affected and there was no damage to any mall property,” said the spokesperson.

A senior police officer said maintenance work for the roof was already ongoing. “We are inquiring into it and have asked for the contractor’s details. Once culpability is fixed, an FIR will be registered,” added the officer.

The incident was reported to police by security guards posted at the mall. DCP (Southwest) Rohit Meena said that a “side-PoP (Plaster of Paris) elevation” fell in the Central Hall of the mall near the escalators. “No injuries have been reported to anyone so far and further inquiry is underway,” added the DCP.
