In the light of repeated complaints put in by students from Northeastern states, who come to Delhi for higher studies,Sri Venkateswara College has taken various steps to ensure a smoother transition for students from Northeast.

The college’s annual prospectus this year includes an additional paragraph advising students to “meet Convener Admissions should they face difficulty, harassment or unreasonable demands”. There is also a welcome note for students from the Northeast: “The college welcomes them wholeheartedly and is committed to helping them become an integral part of the college community.”

Further,to lessen the problems faced by students, the college has asked landlords in the neighbouring areas to register themselves.

Dr Nirmal Kumar,Convener Admissions,Sri Venkateswara College, said,“We had noticed that landlords and property agents harass our Northeastern students as they have problems with language. Therefore,we have made registration mandatory for them. In case of any trouble,we will blacklist them.”

The college also plans to appoint a person before the commencement of the new session to address the concerns of students from the region. “A faculty member, who is sensitive to and aware about the cultural heritage of the Northeastern states will appointed to directly deal with the students,” said Dr Kumar.

As per university guidelines, hostel seats have also been reserved for students from Sikkim and those belonging to the ST category.

“We want to make (students from Northeast) feel at home and ensure that they enjoy college,” said Ambika Mehta,a student at Venkateswara,a part of assistance group.
