Police on Monday arrested a 31-year old Nigerian national on charges of murdering his Burmese girlfriend, whose decomposed body was found in a rucksack at a rented house in Uttam Nagar earlier this month.
The accused, identified as Nwayor Mac Aghagbor alias Inocent Nwayo, was arrested from Kotla Mubarakpur when he was visiting a friend. According to police,Nwayo killed his live-in girlfriend,Chong alias Cecilia, during a scuffle. Nwayo met the woman in November last year and the couple were in a live-in relationship since December. On April 29,they had a fight and the girl died in the scuffle, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime),Ashok Chand.
The accused then bought a travel bag from INA market to dispose of the body, police said. His initial plan was to cut the body into pieces. But due to the foul smell,he wrapped it in a blanket and tied it with a plastic rope. He then put the body in the bag, locked his flat and fled to Mumbai. He returned to Delhi when he felt the situation had cooled down, and was planning to flee to his country via Nepal, added Chand.
The murder came to light almost 20 days later, when the landlord,Gurudev Singh Khalsa, informed the police about a foul smell coming from the house. Singh told police the first floor of the three-storey house had been rented to Nwayo and that he had been missing for the past 15 days. Singh came to collect the rent but found the premises locked. When he tried to contact the accused, his mobile phone was switched off. Noting a foul stench,he informed the police and handed them a copy of Nwayos passport, Chand said.
When investigations revealed that Nwayo may have fled to Mumbai,Assam or Goa,teams were dispatched. Sources later found that he was back in the Capital, following which he was arrested.
Chong worked in a beauty parlour in Munirka and was married to a call centre employee since 2005. Nwayo is a resident of Ikoyi Lagos in Nigeria and had come to India on a visa on 31 October last year. He had also served in the Nigerian Police Force, police said.
