A 26-year-old undertrial lodged inside Tihar Jail was found dead under mysterious circumstances in the early hours of Monday.
Mohammed Naim was found lying unconscious with his head on the ground at jail number 8. According to jail officials, one of the night duty guards saw Naim lying on the ground and tried talking to him.
Our guard thought that he was offering prayers. When the guard asked him why he was not using a blanket, there was no response. It was then that he realised something was wrong. The jail doctor was informed and he was rushed to the infirmary, where Naim was declared dead, said a senior jail official.
A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the incident. Initial investigation has revealed that the deceased was lodged in jail since 2009 for 11 cases, including snatching and an attempt to murder.
On Saturday,he was produced in the Sessions court at Tis Hazari in connection with the cases.
During questioning of the inmates of the ward where Naim was lodged,we were told that he consumed some sedatives. We are looking in to the matter, said a jail official.
Following the incident, relatives of Naim staged a protest at the Deen Dayal Upadhaya Hospital. They accused the jail officials to be behind the death.
The family members claimed that there were some cut marks on the neck and head of Naim.
