Under-19 cricketer’s killer held

According to the police,a sophisticated pistol with seven live cartridges of .32-bore calibre was recovered from Sangwan’s possession. He was overpowered after a brief encounter on the Ring Road,the police said.

A senior officer said Sangwan is involved in more than dozen cases of crime in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh and the UP Police had declared a reward of Rs 50,000 for anyone giving information leading to his arrest.

Sangwan had allegedly killed Gagandeep Singh in Meerut,UP,October 9 last year. The cricketer was shot by the accused and his accomplices after he got caught up in a melee at a local market,the police said.

On October 9,2009,the police,said,Sangwan and three others — Ankit Chauhan,Mukrid Talian and Rahul Sangwan — entered into a row with the owner of a kabab shop,one Shahnawaz. “They left from the shop at the time but returned with two pistols of .32 bore,” a senior officer said. “While Ankit and Mukrid remained in their car,Ajay and Rahul Sangwan went to the shop.

“Rahul shot Shahnawaz and then fired four shots at another person sitting in the shop and fled.”

Gagandeep,who was also at the shop,tried to overpower the accused persons as they fled,and was shot dead in the melee,the officer said.

The police said Sangwan confessed to the crime during interrogation.

He told the police that he was pursing a BCA degree from IIMT,Ganganagar,but dropped out. Sangwan’s younger brother Vijay Raj Sangwan is also an alleged criminal and lodged in Tihar Jail at present,the police said.
