Two undertrials accused of murder escaped from Gurgaon police custody this evening,taking with them the weapon of one of the policemen.
The undertrials and the policemen had hitched a ride from the Saket courts complex to Gurgaon,and taken a lengthy detour through Dwarka on the request of the man who had offered them the ride in his vehicle.
The undertrials,Sandeep Chitania and Neetu,both of whom have been accused of murders and attempts to murder,escaped at 6.45 pm,at a point barely 50 metres from the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest).
Three Gurgaon policemen had brought the two undertrials to Delhi by the Metro,the police said. Around 2 pm,after the men had been produced in court,the policemen were approached by a man in a Mahindra Bolero SUV,who offered to give them a ride back to Gurgaon.
The man asked the officers where they were heading and when they said they were on their way to Gurgaon,the man claimed he was going the same way and offered them a lift, said a senior officer investigating the case.
Once the policemen and the undertrials were inside the vehicle,the driver suggested they drive via Dwarka,since he was hungry and wanted a bite to eat. The policemen agreed.
The man drove to Dwarkas Sector 19 where,some 50 metres before the DCP Southwests office,Sandeep said he wanted to relieve himself,and the was vehicle stopped.
One of the constables took off Sandeeps handcuffs and he got off, the officer said.
Suddenly,Neetu snatched the constables carbine and put it to the constables head. However,ASI Balraj,who was in the car,whipped out his pistol and put it to Neetus head, the officer said. But Neetu swung the carbine,hitting the ASI on his hand,the officer said.
It happened in a matter of seconds. The men pushed the officers out of the vehicle and zoomed off,taking with them the carbine and the warrants, the officer said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) A K Ojha said,We have registered a case and the matter is being investigated.
Jail sources said that Sandeep and Neetu are each involved in around 12 cases of murder and attempt to murder.
Sandeep is a resident of Sonepat; Neetu is from Jhajjar. He has been lodged in the Tihar,Jhajjar and Bhondsi jails.
