Two couples were arrested on Monday for allegedly murdering a retired sub-inspector after he started putting pressure on one of them to repay the Rs 2.15 lakh he had given as loan, the police said.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Neeraj Thakur said Raju (38),wife Vandana (30),Suraj and his wife Seema (25) were arrested from near Red Fort on Monday for murdering Ram Kumar on August 23. Kumar was found dead in Ghaziabad in what was initially thought to be a road accident. However,a postmortem confirmed murder.

Raju, who runs a shop in Gopi Nath Bazaar in Delhi Cantonment, had borrowed Rs 2.15 lakh from Kumar. However,he had been unable to pay the money back. “With Kumar mounting pressure to repay the debt,Raju and wife Vandana hatched a conspiracy to kill Kumar with the help of his neighbour Suraj and his wife Seema. He promised to pay them Rs 50,000 for their assistance,” Thakur said.

On August 23 evening,Kumar visited Raju’s house in Delhi Cantt and asked for the money again. “Raju and Vandana offered him liquor mixed with sedatives. When Ram Kumar fell unconscious,Raju and Suraj along with their wives put him in their Toyota Qualis van and drove towards Ghaziabad in UP. They took him out to an isolated spot near Babugarh and stabbed him to death,” Thakur said.
