Top cop outs 2009 crime list: drop in most cases

According to statistics released by Delhi Police Commissioner Y S Dadwal at the police’s annual conference today,523 murder cases were reported in 2009,against 528 in 2008. Of these,15 per cent were due to sudden provocation on trivial issues,9 per cent due to old enmity,17 per cent were passion triggered,7 per cent over differences among family members,and 12 per cent relate to property disputes,the figures show.

Of 841 persons arrested for murders,94 per cent were first-time offenders and 56 per cent below 25 years.

Murder attempt cases also declined last year,with 353 reported against 369 in 2008,as did robberies: 482 in 2009 against 508 in 2008. Reports of snatching incidents also went southward — 1,293 cases reported in 2009 vis-a-vis 1,320 the year before.

According to police records,burglaries also declined this year with 1,634 cases reported this year against 1,836 cases last year.

Dacoity and kidnapping for ransom,on the other hand,increased in 2009: 32 against 21 for dacoity,and 26 against 22 for the latter,according to police figures.

The number of motor vehicle theft cases reported last year showed a marked increase,according to the records: 11,892 cases in 2009 against 9,949 in 2008.

The city saw fewer rape cases being reported last year: at 452,it was 3 per cent less than 466 reported in 2008.

Molestation cases reported also showed a decline last year: 532 cases reported against 597 in 2008. Senior citizens were a vulnerable lot,with 17 murder cases reported against 15 in 2008.

Delhi cell-happy?

Replying to a flurry of questions on the non-registration of FIRs,as reported first by Newsline on December 18,Dadwal said,“Almost everyone has a cellphone now and there are several calls that are made to the Police Control Room without any reason.”

Newsline had reported that less than 10 per cent of the approximately 14,000 calls to the PCR about snatching cases turned into FIRs from January to November 2008. The case was no different with calls regarding robbery cases.
