Tools of trade lost, eunuchs to start from scratch

On an ordinary night, she would have been dressed in a colourful saree and jewellery, moving from car to car asking for money in exchange for blessing. But Sunday was supposed to be different for Jyoti,a chance to meet friends for the first time in five years at the congregation of eunuchs in Nand Nagri.

But Jyoti and several other eunuchs watched in horror as flames engulfed the tent where the ‘Kinnar Sammelan’ was being held, killing 14 and injuring many.

Apart from friends,Jyoti lost all the “tools of trade” when the blaze gutted down all her sarees and jewellery.

“For us,our saree and jewellery are the most important things. If we don’t look good, then people don’t take us seriously and don’t give us money. Those are our tools.”

A day after the fire,Shanti and Heena were seen looking for their harmonium and tabla at the ill-fated venue.

“We are among those hijra’s who go to houses when there is a marriage or a child is born. But,now, without the instruments,we cannot continue our work till they are replaced,” Shanti said.
