A tiger that went missing from Rajasthan’s Sariska tiger reserve three months ago has strayed into Haryana’s Rewari, officials said.

The Alwar forest department had issued a notice on how the tiger had strayed into a village near Masani Barrage in Haryana on January 18 after it attacked an old farmer who was watering his mustard field in Khushkheda village in Rajasthan.

A wildlife expert who was in Rewari on Friday to inspect the incident said that the male tiger, 3.5 years old, was being tracked by its pugmarks and the Rajasthan forest department alerted Haryana after its last location was found in Rewari.

“The tiger is suspected to have gone away from its family to set up its own territory as big cats do when they are around three years old. On Friday, some farmers in Rewari spotted the tiger in a vegetable produce field and altered the authorities,” said Anil Gandass, a wildlife expert.

The Alwar forest department stated that over the past three months, the male tiger (named ST-2303) in the Alwar Range, under the jurisdiction of the Kishangarh-Bas Wildlife Division, Ismailpur, has been roaming in the nearby areas. “The forest department’s team is regularly tracking its movements. On the morning of January 17, the tiger moved northward from the forest area towards the fields. On January 18, around 2 pm, the tiger attacked a person near Khushkheda village, close to Bhiwadi. The victim received minor injuries, and after treatment at the nearby hospital, was discharged. Alwar Forest Range and Sariska’s special rescue team are attempting to locate the tiger. The district administration and police have been informed of regular patrolling,” the release states.

The department also warned the public not to wander in fields before 7 am and after 5 pm. “Maintain calm if the tiger is sighted; do not create noise or disturb the wildlife using stones, wood, etc,” the department appealed to the public.
