Through the Clicking Glass

The second edition of Delhi Photo Festival returns — bigger, better, bolder

I want to have a long string of images, held together by grace, because grace is that undefineable, non rational, non linear word that I am looking for.” These words by Prabuddha Dasgupta at the first edition of Delhi Photo Festival (DPF) in 2011 will resonate louder at the second edition, which starts September 27. “‘Grace’ was one of the many contenders for the theme, and Dasgupta was slated to hold a workshop this year. Then he passed away and it seemed like a good idea that we dedicate the theme to him,” says Prashant Panjiar, one of the directors of the festival. Other co-directors are Dinesh Khanna,Alka Pande and RMS Liberhan of India Habitat Centre. The DPF features 41 printed and 50 digital exhibitions chosen from over 2,349 submissions from across the world. Picking the exhibitions and events to attend at the festival could be as difficult as walking through a maze. Fortunately,we make that choice simpler for you.

Image Control

On display will be Prabuddha Dasgupta’s early works, from the late 1980s to 1990s. There will also be photographs by Jannatul Mama from Bangladesh. Her exhibition captures the traditional Bangladeshi housemaid along with the housewife, metaphorically highlighting their similarities. Atul Dodhiya’s exhibition will juxtapose the European Art Movement and India’s struggle for freedom. Also check out “The Plot”,an exhibition inspired by Indian cinema held in collaboration with five photographers, and Reuters UK’s collection of 2012’s Pictures of the Year.

Me,Myself and the Camera

The Delhi Photo Festival is not just about walking around and admiring a photograph or two. Photography enthusiasts can enrol for a number of workshops. It may be too late to attend Aveek Sen,Sumit Dayal and Munem Wasif’s workshops,as submissions for those have closed. However,Magnum photographers Abbas and Raghu Rai are mentoring budding photographers during a two-day programme. There are other independent workshops, such as the Black and White Photography and Darkroom Process held by Siddharth Photographix, which covers the basics of exposing black and white films.

Chitter Chatter

“Talks, seminars and presentations are all about the process of photography,” says Panjiar. And hence,we noted some names to lend our ears to. We have French photographer Sacha Goldberger who comes with his popular exhibition “Mamika,Great little Grandma” (also a book),and Piyush Wadehra who will add to the theme, with “The grace of Prabuddha: between stillness and motion”. Rahaab Allana will share albums, postcards and other photographic portraiture from India,Myanmar,Sri Lanka and Nepal in “Allegory and Illusion: Portrait Photography from South Asia”. Other names include Parthiv Shah,Mahesh Shantaram,Sumit Dayal and Dileep Prakash.

Booked Up

The festival will feature the first draft of self-published books, curated by Sohrab Hura. Among the 22 photographers, there is Gauri Gill,Akshay Mahajan,Avani Tanya,Munem Wasif,Tanzim Wahab,Neeraj Priyadarshi and Samar Jodha. The line-up also includes two book launches — Delhi-based photographer Vicky Roy’s Home. Street. Home.,and Artisan Camera: Studio Photography from Central India (Tara Books) by Suresh Punjabi and Christopher Pinney in a collateral event at Triveni Kala Sangam. Then there is the Open Library by Delhi-based photography community,Rang.
