One of the countrys most accomplished fashion designers,Ritu Kumar has been nominated for the first-ever World Fashion Week,to be held at Capriani in New York City on November 11. Celebrating cultural diversity expressed through fashion, the event will have in attendance fashion icons and influential leaders and also see the launch of the global campaign Give your Light to the World.
The ethos of the show being put together by the United Nations is an important milestone,as it emphasises on the organic needs of those who activate fashion. Nominated from India,I feel privileged to show the synthesis of skills and traditions that reflects my countrys diversity in design, said Kumar.
Nominated designers will get to present one specially crafted couture garment at the preview of the World Fashion Week 2012,which will be donated. After the New York gala, these garments will be taken on a world tour,to be exhibited in museums and fashion weeks. Kumar will showcase a richly embroidered ensemble conceived from a style repertoire that goes back 500 years to the Mughal era. Whats happening in Indian fashion today is necessarily based on what preceded it and what will come in future. The motifs and symbols of history are often transformed in this process, but they still resonate the magnificent past, added Kumar.
