TALKING POINT with kirron kher

I have been on television before but to accept this offer was a daunting task. Being a judge is difficult because talent cannot be judged. Each one has his/her point of view.

This is your first time as a judge on national television. Is it overwhelming?
I have been on television before but to accept this offer was a daunting task. Being a judge is difficult because talent cannot be judged. Each one has his/her point of view. On the brighter side I got to meet diverse people from the smallest corners of India. From talented folk artists to brilliant dancers and great acrobats we have them all.

Judges are often looked upon as tormentors. Are you worried of being slotted in that category?
I work straight from the heart. If something is not up to the mark,I will say it. If someone is brilliant I will appreciate him/her. But I am going to be extremely gentle with children and old people because I know they are fragile. This comes from instinct.

What’s easier: being a judge or an actor?
Being a judge, because I am not in a position to perform. But when the show progresses I may find it difficult because then eliminating good talent is very difficult. Each one could be equally good but then as judges you have to sort it out. Acting has always been difficult for me because very rarely do I like what I do.

Have you been a regular watcher of America’s Got Talent? What is it about the show that appealed to you?
I have been a regular watcher of Britain’s Got Talent and it is the diverse talents that really appealed to me. But the real reason of taking up this show was the channel Colors, which has some wonderful shows like Balika Vadhu and Uttaran.

What is your opinion of talent shows on television?
I do enjoy watching some of them like Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa because it is mostly non-dancers who put their best foot forward. I enjoyed the first season of Nach Baliye. I think I enjoyed watching Bigg Boss. Also,I enjoy stand-up comedy shows a lot.

You are the most popular Bollywood mom nowadays. Do you enjoy playing the part?
I do enjoy it but take strong objection when people call me a popular Bollywood mother. They are supporting roles that I play and hence stereotyping my roles isn’t encouraging.

Would you ever be a part of reality shows on television?
No. I was offered Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa twice but I refused it because of lack of time. And when we were offered Nach Baliye,Anupam (Kher) said this is the last thing he is going to do. I enjoy it very much but then I couldn’t have participated in it without Anupam.

Would you ever do television serials?
I have done a bit of television in the past but it is too demanding. I was told I was approached for Is Des Na Aana Meri Laado. In retrospect,I remember someone had called me but then I didn’t have the time.

What next?
There is Kambakkht Ishq up for release. Then there is Qurbaan and Action Replay. There are two other scripts which I am reading right now but they haven’t been finalised.
