Taking a summer break? Let cops know, they will keep eye on house

Planning a long vacation to escape the Delhi summer? Among other things, you can also leave behind your worries regarding the security of your house.

Planning a long vacation to escape the Delhi summer? Among other things, you can also leave behind your worries regarding the security of your house. The Delhi Police has stepped up its effort to stem cases of burglaries, which usually go up during the months of summer vacations.

A recent circular issued by the Delhi Police instructs all personnel to pay extra attention to the houses of residents who are out of the city for a break.

All a resident has to do is drop a written application at the local police station, stating the details of travel duration, and a beat constable will check in on the house two to three times everyday for the period.

Police said thieves target apartments, especially flats, during the two months of summer vacations as they know that the residents would not be at home.

The burglars, police said, keep an eye on the houses to see if there is a lock outside on the main door or if letter and pamphlets have been picked up. This gives the burglars an indication that no one is home.

“It is an important step to curb such incidents. Before leaving the house, people should inform their trusted neighbours and the local police station,” a senior police official said.

The station house officers have been asked to identify various spots vulnerable to thefts, including government-allotted colonies where officials who are on posting in Delhi stay and head home during summer break, police said.

Spokesperson for Delhi Police Rajan Bhagat told Newsline that police have identified houses in vulnerable colonies — like Greater Kailash,Sarojini Nagar,Hauz Khas,Vasant Kunj — and intensified patrolling there.

“We advise people to lock their houses properly and leave a light on inside the house. The beat officer will visit these houses on a regular basis,on duty hours, and keep checking,” Bhagat said.

Regular meetings with representatives of the residents’ welfare association have also been planned.

Jaya,a housewife living in Defence Colony, said,“With so many cases of burglaries reported in quick succession,it was nearly impossible for us to leave the house and go for a long vacation. But now,we will be relieved that police are keeping a check on the house.”
