Support fight, but cannot bypass our democratic system: IAC founder-member

A Founder member of India Against Corruption,Archbishop of Delhi Vincent Concessao, said on Saturday that while he supported the fight against corruption,it is “not correct to dictate a law from the outside”. He said “we cannot set aside our democratic system”.

On Anna Hazare’s stand that he was willing to continue his fast till the end,Concessao said: “I don’t oppose a fast, but a fast unto death is wrong as it is suicidal. Also, there is no question of bypassing our democratic system. We have to educate our parliamentarians and convince them of how we have to fight corruption.”

He said the anti-corruption fight has to be done by education and value education as corruption is both “immoral and sinful”.

“Tomorrow another group will come and demand something else. We have to remember we are in a democracy. I have reservations on putting pressure in any way,” he said.

“It is sad that the government too seems to just respond to pressure, that too is a sign of their weakness,” said Concessao, who was at the forefront of the earlier protest at Jantar Mantar.
