Students asked to sign anti-ragging undertaking

Students are being asked by Delhi University colleges to fill up anti-ragging affidavits.

Students are being asked by Delhi University colleges to fill up anti-ragging affidavits.

Following guidelines formulated by the Supreme Court on the matter, the University Grants Commission has provided all colleges with booklets that contain the definition of ragging apart from the stipulated rules and regulations against ragging. The booklet also contains precautions to be taken by colleges in order to prevent ragging and also lists the action required on part of the institution in case any cases of ragging come to light. An undertaking attached at the back of the booklet is to be filled up by the students taking admission as well as their guardians.

The colleges have taken up measures to ensure the undertaking is signed by all students and their parents. Kanan Nanda,Daulat Ram College principal, said the college would not issue identity cards to first-year students till they submit the undertaking. “The second and third-year students will be asked to fill up the undertaking when they come for re-admission,” she said.

Shaheed Bhagat Singh College has also taken up similar measures. “We will issue identity cards to first-year students only when they submit the undertaking, signed by them and their parents, with other documents required for admission,” P K Khurana, officiating principal, said. He said senior students will be asked to submit the undertaking when they come in for re-admission.

Jaswinder Singh, principal of SGTB Khalsa College, however, said not issuing identity cards to students would not be helpful. “Once the students settle in,we will distribute the affidavits to the students and ensure each student submits the undertaking,” he said. “We will give senior students the affidavits when they come for re-admission,” he said.
