Stormy start to DUSU polls

Day one of campaigning for the Delhi University Students Union elections ended on a stormy note on Friday.

Day one of campaigning for the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections ended on a stormy note on Friday. An FIR naming the ABVP joint-secretary candidate Deepak Bansal did the rounds, threatening his candidature.

The main opposition party,NSUI, announced that it would file a complaint with the university elections office at the earliest. But university sources said that simply being named in an FIR did not mean disqualification.

“We haven’t received a complaint yet and we will take a decision once we get it. But usually in cases where there is no conviction, the candidate is not disqualified,” said chief returning officer Dr C S Dubey.

The FIR,filed in April 2011 at the Maurice Nagar police station, names Bansal in a case of alleged manhandling of employees and destruction of property of a Nirula’s outlet in North Campus.

ABVP media in-charge Dr Sanjay Kumar said the matter was pending in court and the candidate had furnished an alibi.

“There was a fight a few months ago,but the candidate was not in Delhi at the time of the incident. He has submitted evidence to that effect in court,” Kumar said.

With very little time, campaign teams chose to swoop on colleges and leave as early as possible. A few handshakes, two slogans, and it was off to the next campus. Some went inside classrooms to garner support. In the evening, campaigning shifted to evening colleges.

At the Wall of Democracy, opposite the Arts Faculty building, handwritten posters supporting different parties had been put up.

Candidates are also relying on social media to try and reach out to students, with some creating campaign blogs and Facebook pages.
