Two pedestrians were injured when a car hit them before falling into a three-foot-deep pit near the Chattarpur temple in Mehrauli,South Delhi on Thursday morning.

Police are looking for the driver of the Maruti Swift Dzire, who abandoned the vehicle and fled.

Sunil and Ghanshyam were returning home after dropping the latter’s child to school, around 8 am,when the speeding car hit them, police said.

Police said the victims have told them that the driver was speeding and in an attempt to avoid a motorcyclist,he swerved and hit the two men. Then the car plunged into the pit,dug by the Delhi Jal Board.

According to police, the pit was barricaded properly — both by DJB and police — and had signs to alert drivers and pedestrians. “The digging started only yesterday. And the pit had a barricade all around it. I saw the car inside the pit. The driver was driving rashly,” said Madan Kumar,an eyewitness.

From the registration number of the car, police have traced the vehicle as belonging to Ram Kishan,a resident of Fatehpur in Faridabad. A team has been sent to his house for questioning.

While Sunil had minor injuries and was discharged from hospital,Ghanshyam was recuperating at AIIMS Trauma Center with a head injury. “He is out of danger,” said a senior police officer.
