There was high drama in the Patiala House Court complex on Thursday when Ravi Kapoor, key accused in journalist Soumya Vishwanathan’s murder case, flashed a knife before the Magistrate. He said some policemen had given him the knife to attack undertrials in Tihar jail.

After giving orders to seizing the knife, the court asked the escorting policemen and the in charge of the court lock-up to file a written response during the day as to how the accused came to possess the knife.

Metropolitan Magistrate Veena Rani, who was hearing the case in the judge’s absence, also directed the Jail Superintendent of the high-risk cell to file an explanation on the allegations made by the accused by June 4. The Magistrate also asked him to ensure that the accused was not assaulted in prison.

But Tihar jail officials said their responsibility ends as soon as the accused leave the jail. “Nobody takes a knife from Tihar. He must have got hold of it on the way. We will seek an explanation from the escort and forward it to the court when we get the order,” said Tihar’s Law Officer Sunil Gupta. The Tihar jail authorities will seek an explanation from the Deputy Commissioner of Police 3rd Battalion whose men were responsible for escorting Kapoor.

Meanwhile, the replies of the policemen as well as the lock-up in-charge have been record and would be considered when the case comes up for hearing next.

Kapoor was in court in a case related to his bid to escape from hospital last October. In fact, after the escape bid, during which he threw chilli powder on the policemen guarding him at Safdarjung Hospital, the court had asked the Delhi Police to handcuff Kapoor while bringing him from the jail to the courts.

Kapoor is facing prosecution in several criminal cases, including the high profile murder cases of Soumya Vishwanathan and IT executive Jigisha Ghosh. He is also booked under the stringent MCOCA for running a crime syndicate in the Capital.
