Soon, police advisory to Gurgaon bars on women staffers

In view of the rape of a Gurgaon woman near Chhattarpur forest recently, the district administration has decided to issue an advisory to all bars and restaurants in the city, asking them to refrain from making their women employees stay late into the night.

Once the advisory is issued,it may serve legal notices to catering establishments that violate the directive — provided there is a provision in the labour law that one cannot keep women employees at the workplace beyond a stipulated time.

“Although Gurgaon is safe and police are taking all sorts of action to prevent such incidents,we have decided to issue an advisory. We will ask establishments to not allow woman employees to stay late, and if they do so,at least provide them with drop facilities,” Deputy Commissioner P C Meena told Newsline.

Officials maintained that as they don’t know of any legal provision in this regard, they will start by issuing the advisory. “We can issue a compliance order only after working out the legalities. Let us examine the legal aspect first, and only then will we decide on that step,” said Meena.

A 22-year-old employee of a night club at a Gurgaon mall was allegedly raped by a taxi driver on Tuesday morning. The taxi driver had picked up the girl from the mall, after she called him at 4.30 am for being dropped to Kishanganj in South Delhi.

A couple of months ago,a similar incident had occurred, highlighting the dangers faced by womenfolk in the city, especially the ones holding late-night jobs. “Most of the female employees at bars and restaurants in Gurgaon work past midnight, and are rarely provided with a drop cab facility,” a staffer said.

Meanwhile, police maintained that they are doing everything in their capacity to prevent such incidents. “We have stepped up our vigil in Gurgaon, and special emphasis is placed on protection of women.
