Soon,palm park for Noida

Noida will soon have a theme park displaying various varieties of palm.

Inspired by Bangalore’s Lalbagh,it will have seven varieties of palm in a 20-acre plot

Noida will soon have a theme park displaying various varieties of palm. Being touted as one of the new attractions in this Delhi suburb, the park at Sector 105 on DSC Road is apparently inspired by the palm section of Bangalore’s sprawling Lalbagh.

The Horticulture department has finalised seven varieties of palm to be grown on the 20-acre plot. Royal Palm,Thistle,Washingtonia Robusta,Ravenala Madagascariensis — popularly known as Traveller’s Palm — Cycas,Areca Catechu and Date Palm have been shortlisted.

Apart from the varieties of palm, the park would also boast of jogging tracks, landscaping and ample parking space for the visitors. Asked about the ambience and other facilities,an official said a restaurant nestled under the rows of palms has also been proposed.

“The Royal Palm Tree is also known as Mountain Glory and belongs to the family of Arecaceae. It is a favourite in household gardens and can stand up to strong winds. In fact, palm varieties have been found in almost all climates, ranging from topical to deserts,” added Horticulture department director B Prabhakar.

However, the officials could not explain why the palm has suddenly caught their fancy.

The other variety,Mexican Washingtonia or Washingtonia Robusta,is grown as an ornamental tree.

“This variety has a narrower trunk and grows faster than other varieties. The Traveller’s Palm as it is popularly known requires sunny weather and moderate water. The plant grows to an average height of seven metres,” said deputy director Omveer Singh.

Areca Catechu derives the first part of its name from the Malabar coast of India and its fruit is an important ingredient in the Indian paan.

According to the horticulturist, around 130 varieties of palm can grow naturally in subtropical regions.

Prabhakar said they have made adequate arrangements to supply water for the plants.
