Even as the city experienced slight relief in the midst of a severe heat wave, with the minimum temperature dropping below 25 degrees Celsius, cases of power cuts across the capital have left residents high and dry.
The maximum temperature on Friday was recorded at 40.8 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of the year but slightly up from Thursday’s 40.4 degrees Celsius.
Residents of West and East Delhi reported power outages that lasted over two hours on Thursday night.
Power department officials, however, said these were individual cases of power tripping. The onus of uninterrupted power supply is as much the responsibility of the consumers as it is of the discoms. Overloading in the distribution system can lead to disruption of supply. More often than not, this overloading is caused due to two main reasons: unauthorised drawl of power and power theft, an official said.
Power discoms said the over drawal was leading to severe overloading of the distribution system the transformers and feeders resulting in tripping. For safety of the distribution system and to ensure consumers are not inconvenienced as a result, the discoms have no choice but to resort to outages, the official said.
