Shelly paces to mainstream

Delhi’s U-19 fast bowler tries out for KKR,in running for senior team.

Despite Delhi’s poor show in the Cooch Behar Trophy this season, where the side faced the wrath of relegation, seamer Shelly Shaurya has been on a roll. With 23 wickets in 10 matches,Shelly has vouched for his performance even when the team failed to impress. His effort has seen him venture out into unexpected but exciting zones. Firstly,he finds his name among the probables for the under-19 World Cup and if that is not overwhelming, the 19-year old Shelly was informed of the additional rewards of being in the reckoning for the Delhi’s senior side’s one day campaign. And that is not all. Shelly has just flown out to Kolkata,to try out for the Kolkata Knight Riders outfit for the forthcoming IPL 5.

“To be frank,it is a surprise for me. I never expected that I’d be going to Kolkata to attend the trials for the Knight Riders. But it is a good start to the new year and I hope it carries on like this,” says Shelly while talking to Sportline from Kolkata. The 19-year old is not the only one trying his luck at the IPL. His Delhi compatriots Vaibhav Rawal, who played a massive knock of 298 in the under-22 CK Nayadu Trophy and Lokesh Sharma also share the honour with him. While it was only the first day at the Knight Riders camp,Shelly sailed through quite nicely past the initial hurdle—the net session that served as a warm-up to the selection matches ahead. With former players like Pradeep Sangwan and Sreevats Goswami attending the session, the entire exercise has been a learning platform for the youngster who has an even tougher task at hand, once he joins the Delhi camp starting January 19.

“Though the coaches didn’t advice us on the first day,the atmosphere is exhilarating. The pressure to do well does the trick and helps you learn a lot of things. I am sure with the Ranji camp a few days away, the KKR experience will help me perform well there,” he adds. “Playing IPL has always been my dream but never thought the chance would come so soon. But as we are here for the next four days,I will make sure that this opportunity won’t go waste,” Shelly says.

With the Ranji one-dayers scheduled to start from February 19,Shelly isn’t far from breaking into the Delhi team. But making it to the team would be a hard nut to crack, literally. With the senior side also attending the camp,it would be a good opportunity for Shelly to stake his credentials as a promising prospect for the state. “I know it is tough to make it to the final team since all the seniors are in line, but anyway,I am there to perform and give my hundred percent. Being in the probables is an achievement and I hope that I keep performing well to don the Ranji cap soon,” Shelly says.
