A plan to step up security around 200 churches across Delhi was charted out and an order to make special security arrangements on Christmas Eve was passed in a high-level meeting held with Joint Commissioners of all ranges on Tuesday.
According to sources, two armed guards will be placed outside each of the 200 churches, along with a standby riot control force. Besides the district police, personnel from paramilitary forces will also be deployed at several locations, sources said.
The precautionary measure was taken after police received a series of intelligence inputs about terror strikes. The process of deployment in several areas including New Delhi, South and Central Delhi have already begun, sources said.
Security teams have also been asked to inspect CCTV cameras around the churches and see if they are in proper condition.
“The Station House Officers of all areas have been given clear instructions to have a dedicated team for security of churches in their area.
The officers have been asked to inspect the churches and its surrounding areas at least thrice a day. In case CCTV cameras nearby are not functional, they will be repaired. On Wednesday, areas surrounding churches will be thoroughly inspected. Officials have been asked to report suspicious movement to the control room. Immediate action has been ordered against people trying to create mischief,” a police officer said.
Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Deepak Mishra said, “We have stepped up security in areas around churches. Our force is competent to deal with any untoward incident. I request people to enjoy the festival and not panic.”
