Students of Tamana walk the ramp for a cause
Tamana is a non profitable organisation started in 1984 and named after Dr Chona’s daughter (Tamana Chona) who was born with cerebral palsy. It was the paucity of rehabilitative services for the special-needs children which served as the motivation to set up a special-school in a small shed. The venture that started with four students has been an arduous one. We had the honour of our first initiative being inaugurated by the late Princess of Wales Lady Diana in 1992. Tamana provides services to differently abled children. Its second initiative was a vocational training centre called Nai Disha, which was inaugurated by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit in 1998. Its third initiative The School of Hope, was inaugurated in 2003 by former President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam. This became the first institution of its kind to recognise autism as a disability distinct from the other disabilities. Acknowledged nationwide for its contribution in the field of disability and for providing rehabilitative services, its involvement was accredited and granted a Special Consultative Status by the United Nations Economic and Social Council. Since its inception,Tamana has been successfully providing rehabilitative services to children with autism, mental and multiple disabilities. Children with special needs are provided a holistic developmental education, which includes special education, life skills training and vocational training. At Tamana,we are constantly striving to improve our services and programmes by introducing new research-led innovations and equipping our schools with the state-of-the-art technology. Since the past 28 years,Tamana has been industriously campaigning for inclusion and acceptance of the disabled in the society. To this effect,we have been organising many successful events and fundraisers such as our annual fashion show. In this event, students from Tamana walk the ramp hand in hand with professional models. This year our fashion show will address the theme Inclusion and will be choreographed by Aparna Bahl and Tania. Leading fashion designers of the country will be participating in the show including Payal Jain,Rajesh Pratap Singh,Abraham and Thakore,Ashish and Soni,Aneet Arora,Anuradha Ramam and Gautam Gupta.
