The Supreme Court on Friday stayed a Delhi High Court order directing the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to remove all constructions in Ajmal Khan park and restore it to its original state. A Bench headed by Chief Justice

K G Balakrishnan granted stay against the demolition of an indoor stadium in the park. Attorney General Goolam E Vahanvati and advocate Sanjib Sen,appearing for the MCD,contended the High Court had erred in issuing the demolition order and the matter involved interpretation of the Master Plan of Delhi-2021. On November 18,2009,the High Court passed the order on a plea by an NGO,which had alleged a 100-tonne AC plant that would be installed at the stadium would prove hazardous for the environment. The proposed stadium is supposed to be a world-class facility with a seating capacity of 3,000.
