Adversity tends to act as a litmus test and the Taj Mahal Place & Tower, the Mumbai heritage hotel that was ravaged by terrorists for four days last November, has managed to display fortitude while evoking empathy, but not sympathy. Proof: the hotel has quietly been undergoing refurbishment and the focus is on repaying the solidarity displayed by regulars.

The hotel will not confirm dates as they depend on logistical deadlines, but the serving staff has been informed the burnt down restaurants—Wasabi,Harbour Bar and Golden Dragon — aim to open on

November 25.

That the revamped restaurants that were completely desecrated will get more business is indisputable, but we predict it would be for the enhanced dining experience. Wasabi, the highly rated contemporary Japanese restaurant, has been housed temporarily at the rooftop Rendezvous function room since January. One of the only flaws of the original Wasabi space was that its access was via a winding staircase leading from the Harbour Bar. This will now be replaced by a capsule lift and the staircase will be made wider and less dizzying. Similarly, the Tettami room, the private dining room here, will not have Japanese-style low-seating but will retain a round table.

The décor in all three eateries will be more contemporary, with multiple interior decorators contracted. Wasabi is employing the services of the decorators responsible for the elegant Nobu,in New York,London and Dubai. The Harbour Bar,Mumbai’s first-ever licensed bar, will still house only premium spirits, but will expand on its array of Grappa and Belgian beers.

While the menu at Wasabi is expected to be roughly the same, the Chinese Golden Dragon is meant to have a significantly revamped one. The restaurant will have the most significant change to its décor as there will now be a live station at its centre. The Taj aims to re-open the old wing starting with its restaurants followed by its rooms; the latter expected to be ready in the first quarter of 2010.
