Disregarding the Supreme Court of Portugals directives,a city court on Saturday framed charges in an extortion case under the stringent MCOCA Act against extradited gangster Abu Salem. The court said no new offence had been added in the FIRs or the chargesheets, and all the offences were in knowledge of the Portugal court. Extradited from Portugal in 2005,Salem is accused of demanding Rs 5 crore from Delhi businessman Ashok Gupta. Taped conversations, part of the extortion case, were played on Saturday in the court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja. The court thereafter framed charges under Maharashtra Control of Organised Crimes Act (MCOCA) and the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against Salem, present in the court amid tight security.
