When I joined the film industry,I’d planned to retire in 10 years. It’s been four decades and I have no clue when I will stop,” says actor Hema Malini,as she prepares for her next release — Raj Kanwar’s Sadiyaan, where she plays a Muslim woman from Pakistan who forms a link between the other characters in the film.

“The film is based in the post-independence era and has a strong message of unity. It is relevant to our times as we are plagued by terrorism and the Hindu-Muslim divide,” says the veteran actress, who was recently appointed Vice-President of the BJP. In Sadiyaan, she will share screen space with another South Indian beauty,Rekha. “Rekha and I have been very good friends for years. So it was nice working with her after many years,” says Malini.

Although she is an admirer of Kanwar’s old-school style of filmmaking,it was on actor Shatrughan Sinha’s insistence that she agreed to do Sadiyaan. “His son Luv,who debuts in this film,is like a son to me. I have seen him from the day he was born and it is really wonderful to be a part of his first film,” she says with a fond smile.

The actor, known for portraying strong women characters, says that there aren’t too many scripts written for ageing actresses in Bollywood. “I was lucky to have got one such character in Baghban. With Sadiyaan I get to portray another one,” she adds.

Malini is also busy with her home production Tell Me Oh Khuda starring daughter Esha Deol. “The movie also stars yesteryear actors Vinod Khanna,Rishi Kapoor and Dharmendra,” she confirms. And when will we see her and Dharmendra together again? “In my next film,” she says.
