Rights panel seeks report from school

The Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights has asked ITL School,Dwarka,to submit a report in a week on the medical arrangements made for the school trip to Mussoorie.

The Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR) has asked ITL School,Dwarka,to submit a report in a week on the medical arrangements made for the school trip to Mussoorie.

Ten-year-old student Shivam Soni died during the trip purportedly after falling off the balcony of Dunsvirk Court hotel, where the group of 180 students, apart from teachers, was putting up.

The DCPCR has sent a letter to the school principal. “We sent the letter today. They should have taken a doctor along or tied up with the local authorities there,” said Dr Sarita Sarangi,a DCPCR member.

“It is irresponsibility on the part the school if they did not take care of medical arrangements,” she added.

The Mussoorie police, meanwhile, registered a case of murder against “unidentified persons” at the Mussoorie police station on the complaint put in by Shivam’s uncle,Pravin Kumar Verma. The postmortem report found Shivam’s neck bone to be broken and signs of injuries on other body parts.

Shivam’s body was found outside the hotel around 5.30 am on Sunday by a driver of the hotel. A resident of Najafgarh,Shivam had left with the school group on May 7 and was supposed to return on Tuesday. The trip was cut short and the students returned on Monday evening.

School principal Dr Anjali Sethi said the school is ready to cooperate with the police in the probe. “We too want to know what happened. I spoke to the teachers and they stand by what they have said earlier, that they had checked Shivam’s room sometime between 11.30 pm on Saturday and midnight and had found all four boys asleep.” Twenty teachers and three caretakers had accompanied the students and four boys were put up in one room.

Shivam’s uncle said the family has lodged a written complaint against the school at the Dwarka Sector 23 police station. A case has not been registered yet.

Shivam’s parents said the responsibility of the death lies “with the school”. They have also alleged that Shivam was bullied by a group of students in the school. They had been called to the school on May 5 after Shivam had a tiff with some students, they added. Sethi, however, said: “The boy who fought with Shivam in school had not gone for the trip.” Shivam’s father Vijay Kumar Verma said: “The body was facing upwards. Had he fallen accidentally, his face should have been facing the ground.”

The school on Tuesday to mourn Shivam’s death.
