A 75-year-old retired IPS officer was mowed down by a train in the Delhi Cantonment area after he tried to cross the tracks on foot on December 20, officers said Saturday.

Mohandas Menon, a 1974-batch IPS officer, was accompanied by his driver, who had worked for him for the past 25 years, when the incident took place around 11.30 am.

Said an officer, “Menon was supposed to attend the last rites of a relative in the area. His car reached Brar Square at Delhi Cantonment… but the railway crossing was shut to vehicles and the other route was showing a long distance to the destination. So Menon got out and tried to cross the track on foot.”

The driver asked him not to do so because of the safety risks involved, said an officer. “Menon could not hear the sound of an incoming train, which mowed him down… Subsequently, the driver made a PCR call and a police team rushed to the spot… he was shifted to the hospital where he was declared dead on arrival,” added the officer.

Said an officer, “It is suspected he bent down and crossed the barrier installed on the boundary of the track to get to the other side.”

Police said inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC are being carried out and the body has been handed over to Menon’s family following a postmortem. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Menon was a UP-cadre IPS, who had served RAW and IB during his tenure.
