Respite from heatwave next week: IMD

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a respite from the heatwave in the capital.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a respite from the heatwave in the capital. Officials said the temperature is likely to decrease in the coming week.

In Delhi, while the Palam Met observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 46.7 degrees Celsius for a second day on Wednesday, the Safdarjung Met observatory also marked the maximum temperature the same as Tuesday’s 45.1 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature stood at 28 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of the year. The humidity levels hovered between 18 and 40 per cent on Wednesday.

The Met department, however, has predicted that the maximum temperatures over the entire region, including Delhi, are likely to “peak” between May 22 and 24,till Friday.

Many parts of Jammu and Kashmir,Himachal Pradesh,Punjab,Haryana,Delhi,Rajasthan, and some parts of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand are under the grip of severe to very severe heatwave conditions since May 18. The main factors contributing to the conditions of the prolonged heatwave spell of more than a week have been noted as the absence of any western disturbance activity, strong hot northwesterly winds and subsidence of air due to the anti-cyclone over the region.

“An approaching western disturbance is likely to break the anticyclone over the region and moderate the intensity of the hot air advection, thereby reducing the maximum temperature by about two degrees Celsius from May 26 onwards,” Met department said.
