The question of what is it that really matters to human beings in today’s contemporary world may be a hard one to answer. Is it the environment? The fight for our fundamental rights or developing cities? Ten artists, who are part of the exhibition titled “It Matters”,currently on at the India International Centre art gallery, have tried to answer these questions through their artwork.

While talking about the 13 works on display,Seema Dahiya, curator of the exhibition, which has been organised by Delhi-based art and culture organisation,SEHER,said,“The idea of the show is to think and reflect on what really matters to us as human beings. Right now there are so many issues surrounding us and artists have their own way of expressing them.” Dahiya also added that Waseem Ahmed, one of the participating artists, had told her that artists may not be vocal about the issues but this is their way of expressing their opinion through their works.

Baroda-based artist KP Reji, has painted a tyre,a log of wood and a stone in the middle of a road in his work titled Wood,Tyre and a Stone. “This is one image we see in newspapers, where pelting stones and burning tyres make it into everyday photographs. It is a part of the struggle for our fundamental rights, for food and safety of women. I am not an activist but this is what I see from a distance,” he says. Another sculpture by Kishor Sharma shows a man with his arms wide open, looking into the sky,a depiction of freedom

According to artist Rajan Krishnan, one of the grave issues facing today’s world is the state of the environment, quite evident from his work Plant of Sustenance. The work depicts a tree with green and yellow leaves. He says,“The plants are suggestive of life on earth, and supportive of nourishing the environment. They help sustain life on the planet. We inhale what they exhale.” Krishnan further points out,“The idea of development works in reverse mode and every human invention to improve the life on our planet works against the existence of life in general, affecting the biodiversity.”

The exhibition is on display at Art Gallery,Gate no 1,India International Centre,40 Max Mueller Marg, untill September 15
