Railways drop Rawat for indiscipline

What promised to be a perfect big match-eve,turned unexpectedly sour for Railways wicketkeeper Mahesh Rawat.

What promised to be a perfect big match-eve,turned unexpectedly sour for Railways wicketkeeper Mahesh Rawat. Arriving early at the Capital’s Karnail Singh Stadium on Monday morning and attending the nets ahead of Tuesday’s Ranji Trophy match against defending champions Mumbai,Rawat also returned home early with news coming in that he’s been left out of the squad.

Even though the duration and exact reason weren’t specified,Railways said the player had been dropped on “disciplinary” grounds. It’s also learnt that Rawat invited the punitive action following a spat with skipper Murali Kartik during Railways’ last match against Orissa in Bhubaneshwar.

“We have been apprised of the situation through a letter and are waiting for all the details. We have decided to replace him (Mahesh) in the squad due to disciplinary reasons,” Railways Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) secretary Rakesh Yadav told Sportline on Monday.

The corrective measure, however, may not apply for the full season and Yadav said a final decision will be taken later.

“It doesn’t mean he’ll sit out for the rest of the season. We have to consider all the information that we receive regarding this matter and the current decision is for immediacy,” Yadav added.

Rawat, who was involved in an unbeaten 88-run ninth-wicket stand against Orissa, sought return to action as early as possible “respecting the management’s decision”.

“I just came to know about it (the decision) after practice. I’m disappointed that I will not be playing because I had been practising hard each day. I don’t want to get into the details of what happened but I’m ready to accept the team’s decision of leaving me out,” the Rajasthan Royals player said.

“At this age,the last thing I would like to get involved in is controversy. My job is to play cricket. I’m still in the right fame of mind to come and play. I’m disappointed because I was just about regaining my touch. I hope to return to the cricket field soon and will learn from whatever has happened,” the 24-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman added.
