Protesting slum residents turn violent,nine policemen injured

A day after a fire broke out in a slum in Shahbad Dairy,the protesting residents turned violent on Tuesday and injured nine policemen.

A day after a fire broke out in a slum in Shahbad Dairy,the protesting residents turned violent on Tuesday and injured nine policemen. Apparently,the residents were protesting as they suspected a youth to have ignited the fire,the police said.

“The locals caught one Phool Chand,who was moving about suspiciously in the locality,” a senior police officer said. “They started beating him as someone had spread the rumour that he wanted to construct buildings at the site and could have caused the fire.”

Around 250 jhuggies were gutted in the fire on Monday.

As the residents were beating the youth,a police party reached the spot. This led the locals to start protesting. They soon turned violent and started pelting stones on the police.

The police used teargas shells to being the mob under control. When it proved inadequate,the police resorted to lathicharge. Later,several police personnel were deployed in the area. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer District) Atul Katiyar said what led the residents to target Phool Chand is being investigated. Meanwhile,a case of rioting has been filed at the Shahbad Dairy police station and eight persons have been arrested.
