The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has proposed installation of pre-fabricated structures to augment the number of classrooms in its schools. The plan aims to ensure that the classrooms are ready for use in three months.
Chairman of Education Committee Mahendra Nagpal said the proposal has been sent to the commissioner after deliberation with the Education department. In the traditional method,it takes a long time to make a classroom that costs about Rs 5 lakh. The pre-fabricated rooms take just three months and are valued at Rs 3 lakh. They have a life span of 20-30 years and are suited to any kind of weather, he said.
A senior official of the MCD said that in the last few years,MCD has been able to construct about 600 new classrooms,but the requirement is higher.
The MCD runs 1,746 schools and about 25 per cent function out of kaccha structures. The civic agency plans to convert all its schools into pucca structures by 2015.
