The Anti-Obscene Calls cell, launched by the Delhi Polices Crime Branch last month,is reportedly a huge hit.
Aimed at protecting women from lewd and objectionable phone calls and messages, the three appointed teams are getting an overwhelming response from women, with the helpline getting as many as 50 calls per day,the police said.
The police have, however, not registered any case on the basis of complaints received by the helpline yet. We have not registered any case on the request of the complainants. They just wanted the calls to stop and didnt want to register cases. We are verifying the contents of the calls and action is being taken, an officer said.
Complainants can call on the 24-hour helpline numbers. We will keep the identity of the callers confidential if they desire so and they wont be asked to come to a police station to register a case, Delhi Police PRO Rajan Bhagat said.
The helpline numbers are 27894455 and 9911135446. Objectionable text and multimedia messages (MMS) can be forwarded to the mobile number along with the senders phone number. Complaints can also be sent by e-mail to acp-sit-dl@nic.in.
After receiving the complaint,a Delhi Police officer calls the complainant to gather details about the phone number of the sender,he said.
We make all efforts to put the complainant at ease. We try to find out about the calls or messages received without being intrusive about the details,so that the complainant does not feel offended, an officer said. An officer from the cell then telephones the offender and summons him to a police station for counselling. We also warn the offender of stringent action in case the act is repeated. On an average,we are able to address over a dozen complaints ever day, he said.
