Police on Monday rescued a black buck, which was brought from Meerut to be sold in the city, and arrested four persons from Southeast Delhi in this regard.

The accused — identified as Bhupender (24),Amarnath (23),Pintoo Kumar (21) and Pawan (24) — were arrested from Greater Kailash in Southeast Delhi. “We received information that a few people were trying to sell a black buck in Greater Kailash, near W-Block Park,” said a senior police officer.

Following that, police conducted raids and found the black buck in a car. They then arrested the four accused. “They had captured the deer from Sanjay Van in Partapur, and had come to Delhi hoping to get at least Rs 1 lakh,” the officer said.

The four accused hail from Meerut. While Amarnath was a graduate,Bhupinder was yet to complete his degree course and Pintoo Kumar was a motor mechanic by profession. Pawan,on the other hand, was engaged as a driver by the other accused.

Black bucks are an endangered variety of antelope found in India. “Live black bucks are sold to people,so they can be raised as pets, and even for their meat. We suspect the accused may have brought the animal here,so they could sell it to high-profile people who fancy eating exotic meat during social gatherings,” said Jose Louies, who heads the Enforcement Assistance and law division of the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI).

According to WTI,Meerut is a hub for illegal wildlife trade in the country. In August 2008,a major undercover operation assisted by the organization unveiled conclusive evidence of the emerging online wildlife trade market in India.
