How many times do you have the luxury of watching some of the most cherished poems being converted into films? The second edition of Sadho Poetry Film Festival that unfolded at Alliance Française at Lodhi Road over the weekend showcased 45 short poetry films from 15 countries.
From the beautiful rendering of Canadian poet-novelist Leonard Cohens poem A Kite is a Victim into a one-minute animation film,to little-known English poet Gaia Holmes poem Archaeology transformed into blurring sepia images the packed audience almost stood shoulder to shoulder beneath black umbrellas, traversing the leafy lanes with the narrator Jo Bryan as she skimmed over marked envelopes,dog-eared pages and partially covered faces seen in the mote filled light of the projector.
We have always made an attempt to bring the best to our audience from all over the world. Sadho has a twin pronged approach, not only do we bring forth poems but also provide a platform for young filmmakers, said Jitendra Ramprakash, the curator of the festival.
So while Ian McLaughlins Litter Picker ,about trailing a lone scavenger through narrow lanes of an English borough,is narrated in a crisp Irish brogue by the poet,a beautiful animation film The Girl with Liquid Eye written by Charlotte Boulay-Goldsmith and directed by Adam Smith presents the fear, confusion and sense of loss of a girla stick figure with wiry black hair and inky blue eyes whose eyes turned to hollow holes, brain shrinks and soul flushed away when she realizes her world has come to an end.
And proving comic relief was One Person ,a three minute film presented in a grid form wherein Lucy, the writer-director-narrator peeps through a cardboard box, fulminating over the events in the world where200 died in cluster bombs,600 died in prison and 900 died for creating a new world.
