Over 15,000 police personnel, along with SWAT teams and more than 200 police vehicles armed with high-tech gadgets and weapons, will be part of the arrangements made for the inauguration of the new International Exhibition-cum-Convention Centre (IECC) by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday. Senior police officers said this event will serve as a rehearsal for the security arrangements for the G20 Summit, as the event will take place at the same site.
A significant number of police personnel from all districts, specialised units, traffic unit, and other areas will be deployed to provide security cover for the 120-acre redeveloped Pragati Maidan Complex. Staffers will be on full-day duty to test arrangements for the summit in September, said police. While most district police personnel will guard the entire complex, a small section of officers, along with the NSG, will go inside the 13-acre IECC for the intensive security of the PM.
S S Yadav, Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic), said they have been informed about the G20 security arrangements and the traffic department has made adequate provisions. Police deployment has been increased in the Lutyens area, and the Pragati Maidan Tunnel will be closed for the day, as NSG forces will be in charge of the PM’s security in that area, said police.
Sources said more than 500 police vehicles will be used, out of which 200 will be provided to the security unit of Delhi Police for G20 arrangements. These vehicles will be equipped with GPS systems, AI-enabled cameras, and weapons.
“We will also check how many vehicles can be parked and where they will be positioned. The vehicles are vital for security as they will have bulletproof material, explosive detectors, night vision equipment, vehicle surveillance systems, etc.,” said an officer.
Senior officers said more than 800-1000 police personnel from each district will be deployed for the rehearsal.
“We had a meeting with senior officers from the ministry and security forces. It has been decided to conduct a test of the arrangements. Police officers from the security wing will be in blue suits. Others will be in their regular uniforms,” said an officer posted at Police Headquarters.
Police said personnel have been instructed to look for drones, snipers, or any suspicious flying object, as well as any suspicious chemical/biological substance found on land. “There have been incidents of street crimes and crimes against women in the area. We have received threats which are being looked at…” added the officer.
The rehearsals will be attended by 19 markswomen from the Delhi Police who recently completed their training with the ITBP in Kerala. In a first, the Delhi Police are employing women SWAT teams for security.
DCP-level officers from Security, PM Security, and New Delhi have been directed to remain alert. “We will monitor footage from CCTVs and AI cameras in real-time to avert any untoward situation…,” said another officer.
