Though shes on the retiring end,London-based mezzo-soprano Viola da Cunha laughs when you ask her what took her Delhi debut so long to come by. I had visited Delhi as a tourist 35-years ago,but this is the first time I will be performing here, said Cunha,a Goan, who moved base to London in 1968 to study at the Trinity College of Music under well-known conductor James Gaddarn. Since then, she has been visiting India regularly, meeting her family in Mumbai and performing at the spectacular Monte music festival in Goa and at several other concerts in and around Mumbai. Last year, the feisty grandmother of two, also performed for the Poona Music society. My friends wanted me to perform in Delhi,so they arranged for this concert, says Cunha. At the hour-long performance at the India International Centre (IIC) today,Cunha will sing Spanish songs, compositions from Schumann, besides Broadway hits from Meredith Willsons The Music Man.
