A 61-year-old man,who was allegedly set on fire by two youths nearly ten days ago, succumbed to his injuries on Thursday morning.
Godhu Ram was a resident of Dera Village in Fatehpur Beri near Mehrauli. He was sleeping on a cot outside his home in Dera Village when two youths of the village allegedly poured petrol on him and set him on fire on the night of May 11. His relatives have alleged that Fatehpur Beri police did not register a case despite receiving a complaint about his death.
Surender, the eldest son of Godhu, said the family was sleeping inside when they heard screams of Gajju,a mentally challenged neighbour, who was sleeping on another cot next to his father.
Gajju was screaming for help when I came out of the house. We found our father rolling in sand to extinguish the flames. We poured water over him, covered with blankets and rushed him to Safdarjung Hospital. But the doctors refused to admit him saying there was no vacant bed available. Later we took him to RML Hospital where the doctors told us that the chances of his survival were minimal, said Surender.
He had suffered 70 per cent burn injuries. According to the postmortem report Godhu died due to burn injuries, said a police officer.
Explaining the reason for the attack,Surender said Rishi (39),a resident of the same village, used to park his chartered bus at the spot where Ram slept.
Earlier my father did not object, but later Rishi and his friend Dhani Ram started consuming alcohol in the bus. They had an argument with my father on the evening of May 11 and threatened to kill him. On the same night, they set him on fire, Sanjay said.
Surender claimed that despite a complaint to the Fatehpur Beri police station, they did not register an FIR. He claimed that his father was fit enough to record a statement, but in spite of repeated calls policemen did not visit him.
We went to the police station many times and shot off telegrams to the district top policeman (DCP south,HGS Dhaliwal) and the city police chief (YS Dadwal). Nothing has happened so far, said Sanjay, another son of Godhu.
