Outer Ring Road to be signal-free soon,Art panel gives nod for flyovers

The Delhi Urban Art Commission has given the go-ahead for construction of a series of flyovers along the Outer Ring Road, which would help in ensuring signal-free movement along this stretch.

The Delhi Urban Art Commission (DUAC) has given the go-ahead for construction of a series of flyovers along the Outer Ring Road, which would help in ensuring signal-free movement along this stretch. Another flyover along the Ring Road has also been given approval, with the observation that a revised drawing be submitted along with a traffic simulation study.

In the minutes of the meeting,DUAC has written that the concept of the proposals have been accepted but,in future, the PWD or other concerned agencies should submit traffic transportation proposals to the commission along with the simulation study. This is to ensure that the commission can evaluate the schemes from the point of view of aesthetics and urban design.

“We were asked to submit a series of documents to DUAC,which has been complied with. Now,we can start hiring consultants to prepare a detailed project report for these projects. This work will take three months. Thereafter,we will prepare estimates and float tenders for awarding work. The ground work is likely to start by end of this year,’’ said a PWD official. These projects were stuck with DUAC for over two years.

Meanwhile,in a letter dated December 19,2011,the PWD had submitted a response to the commission’s observations and had said that all aspects of traffic and transportation have been considered by the UTTIPEC of DDA.

“The urban development ministry had also written to DUAC about this and had forwarded a letter from the L-G,where he had highlighted that the UTTIPEC has experts from various organisations,’’ said a PWD official.

The Outer Ring Road project comprises making a 20 km stretch between Vikaspuri and Wazirabad signal-free. The project is estimated to cost Rs 2,200 crore.

The project will be developed in four sections. The stretch between Vikaspuri to Meera Bagh is 4 km and 3.3 km of it is to be elevated. The Mongolpuri to Deepali Chowk stretch measures 4 km. It will also be partially elevated. Similarly,2.6 km of the 4 km road between

Madhuban Chowk and Mukarba Chowk will be elevated and the stretch from Mukarba Chowk to Wazirabad will have three flyovers.
